About Matt Goodwin
Even from an early age I have had a natural fascination and "knack" for all forms of electrical technology. From my first computer at the age of ten, I dabbled in configuring the finer aspects of computers, and basic programming.
Being frustrated at the difficulty in performing some tasks actually peaked my curiosity to know more.
Throughout my high school curriculum I excelled in computer classes, and produced several pieces of work that impressed both my teachers and my peers in their complexity. From the age of sixteen I was getting regular voluntary work helping friends use and configure their computers, and then received several paid jobs from good referrals.
After receiving one of the top VCE marks in Victoria for Information Processing and Management, I was accepted into my first choice course at Deakin University in 1999. My major of Applied Computing provides the following course description taken from the Deakin University Handbook:
The study of computer science/software development has a strong technical emphasis on the development of skills in programming, including object-oriented and Internet programming, operating systems, databases and data networks. Graduates of this course meet the qualification requirements for professional membership of the Australian Computer Society at the ‘Professional’ (highest) level.
Graduates have the capacity to develop and implement software, databases and networks of considerable size and complexity in commercial, industrial or administrative environments. Studies in computer science/software development provide a thorough grounding in the basic skills of computing such as computer programming and software engineering, while at the same time providing the theoretical understanding to enable graduates to keep abreast of this rapidly changing field. In this way, students are taught how to put their learning into practice. Such graduates are very attractive to employers throughout the computing industry.
Towards the end of my first year at Deakin I was offered the position of Technical Administrator at Royal Inventions. The position offered close to full-time work while I studied, and had a demanding work-load of advanced web development, network administration, and user support.
At the start of my third year of university I found that the amount of referrals from my casual fixing of friends computers, would allow me to go into the freelance web development role I have today.
My professional learning did not stop when I graduated from Deakin University in 2002, but has allowed me to focus on further working for my clients. The challenge of creating advanced sites that bring in large amounts of customers to the businesses I work with, is one that I enjoy everyday.
